When not on charter, both Ross and Scarlet Oyster spend much of their summer with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust taking children sailing who are in recovery from cancer or leukemia. “Racing Ross” also skippers Scarlet Oyster in the JPMorgan Round the Island Race leading a young crew from the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust who are all in recovery from serious illnesses. In 2013 they managed a very impressive 3rd in class!!
Ross became involved with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust through his father Gordon who was a great supporter and friend of the charity. It was Gordon who was instrumental in getting the Round Britain idea off the ground, whereby he pledged Scarlet Oyster to take a group of young people around Britain. Although sadly Gordon did not get to see this incredible adventure, 74 young people enjoyed sailing round Britain in 2009 with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, and the voyage was successfully completed in Gordon’s memory. www.ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org
